Really? My “bone on bone” joint can be pain free without surgery?

That's right, just because a radiologist (who has never examined you in person) writes a report stating that one of your joints has lost most or all of its cartilage and is then regurgitated to you by your primary doctor or surgeon as being “bone on bone,” doesn't mean that surgery is a necessity. And no, I don't mean just live on pain meds the rest of your life. I mean, it's possible to fix the cause of your joint dysfunction. Really? Hmm... How's that possible? Are you sure?

Even though I routinely help people get out of “bone on bone” joint pain in my practice, I never was 100% sure that I could help a new case each time he/she came to me. At least not until I read Stu Mittleman's book, “Slow Burn.”

In his book he tells his personal story about how he damaged his knee ligaments requiring surgery at the age of approximately 25. After the successful surgery, and after his physical rehab, he asked his surgeon when he would be able to start running again? His surgeon laughed at him and told him that he had no cartilage left in that knee and it was in fact bone on bone. He told him that he would never be able to run again without significant knee pain.

Stu didn't like that answer so he found a doctor like me who found out why his cartilage wore out and then helped him fix these underlying causes. After 6 months, Stu was able to run again without pain! And not only that, he went on to become a world class ultra-marathon champion!!! All without knee pain! Now that is impressive!

No, Stu's cartilage did not regenerate..... So if his cartilage did not regenerate, then how did he get his knee to be pain-free? Well, it was unique to his situation, just as each patient I treat has a unique situation along with a unique treatment process. But I'll give you the basic formula.

Before I do, I want to say that once I read this story of Stu Mittleman's, I realized that if he can run hundreds of thousands of miles over his lifetime on a knee that's bone on bone with no pain, then it is definitely highly possible for anyone to get out of pain without joint surgery, especially since they likely don't strive to be a long distance runner, but instead just want to walk around the house or at the grocery store without pain.

Plus, my success rate at helping bone on bone cases has gone up to nearly 100% since my advanced training in 2015 in Michigan and my subsequent implementation of cox flexion distraction treatment tables.

So with all the stars aligning, I thought it was time to write this article for you guys and for your friends and family who may be needlessly suffering and contemplating surgery, or who have had a failed joint surgery.

First let's briefly go over what causes a knee to wear out in the first place:

1) Weak muscles surrounding the joint, causing the joint to track poorly, causing the two cartilage surfaces of the joint to bump into each other every time you move the joint, over time wearing out the cartilage.

2) Low level body-wide chronic inflammation, including in the joint that's wearing out. This inflammation swells the cartilage slightly so that the two surfaces bump into each other even more, wearing them out even faster.

So now that we know generally what causes the joint to wear out, all we have to do is fix numbers 1 and 2 above and, believe it or not, the pain goes away! So in other words, it's the grinding and internal bumping of the two cartilage surfaces into each other, during normal daily movements, combined with inflammation that causes the pain. If we can somehow get rid of the inflammation and help the joint to track properly by increasing the strength of the surrounding muscles, we're golden.

That's it!

Of course I could write a whole book on the specifics of what causes the joint's muscles to be weak (there are 100's of causes) and what causes the body to be inflamed (again, hundreds of causes). But let me just say what is NOT the cause of the muscle weaknesses around your bone on bone joint: wait for it...... weak muscles. Huh?

Except in very very rare conditions (like Myasthenia Gravis, which you don't have or your doctor would have told you by now), the only cause of a truly weak muscle is having it in a cast for 6 weeks. I call this primary atrophy, or “small muscle.” The cure for this is physical therapy, aka exercise. But unless you've been in a cast over that joint for 6 weeks, you don't have primary atrophy, and therefore, physical therapy won't fix the underlying cause of the muscle weaknesses around your joint. And, more likely, the physical therapy will wear out the joint faster because it's not tracking right during your physical therapy exercises.

So, pretty much in virtually all cases, the “muscle weakness” is actually due to poor nerve or poor nervous system function. The nerves and nervous system tell the muscle when to contract, how hard to contract, and when not to contract. In other words the muscle is stupid because it has no brain, instead your brain directs and coordinates the muscles via the nerves. So a weak, or more accurately, dysfunctional muscular system, is really a dysfunctional nervous system. You have to fix the nervous system, including the peripheral nerves that supply the muscles to that joint, in order to enable the muscles to do their job of moving the joint without it grinding the two surfaces of cartilage together.

This is what I specialize in. Once the nervous system coordinates the muscles correctly again so that the joint tracks right, the pain goes away.... as long as there is no body-wide inflammation.

The most common causes of body-wide inflammation are: bad oils in the diet, especially trans-fats and rancid oils, too many omega 6 oils, deficiency of omega 3 oils, hidden food sensitivities, too much sugar feeding yeast or other dysbiotic organisms in your gut, or liver congestion from all of the above. 
And, sadly, all too often, there is a body-wide inflammation as a side effect of prescription medications. 

But never fear, I've got plenty of simple and natural things to fix these things too. Stay tuned for more on this.

So in summary, if you have a joint that is painful and your doctor says it is bone on bone and needs surgery, you would do well to come see me so I can diagnose why your nervous system can't control the joint's muscles correctly. I find this out by combining the specific information you give me about the history of your condition with the information I glean from physically examining your neuromuscular system using mostly traditional neurological tests (that neurologists rarely use anymore because they have become overly reliant on radiologist reports from your MRI or x-rays). Your history and examination (and MRI findings if available) must correlate to make a solid diagnosis. Once this is accomplished, the treatment can be rather straight forward.

Dentistry Part 2: What was underneath my crown, and other updates

So upon cutting off my “permanent” crown (that had been installed less than 2 months prior), a small amount of tooth decay was found in the underlying tooth! This could mean only one of three things: 1) the last dentist did not see the decay and so left it there accidentally, 2) the last dentist did not sterilize things well before gluing on the crown and so decay developed in the last two months due to operator error, or 3) … well, I just refuse to believe the third possibility.

Needless to say, the decay is now gone and a thorough sterilization took place before the new metal-free, perfectly fitting, crown was installed (did I mention same day?).

Another eye opening story:

Of course my new first hand understanding of how many dental mishaps are going on out there has led me to investigate the tougher cases at my clinic with a new eye for possible dental causes. So I found a patient who wasn't getting better fully and it turns out, after George Goodheart inspired testing at my office, that two of her teeth may be the culprit to her ill health. So I referred her to a great dentist (yes, the one who fixed my crown), asking her to let me know when she makes an appointment with him so that I can attend.

Two weeks later, I'm at her dental visit waiting for the doctor when she confesses that she went to her usual dentist the day before just to get his opinion. According to him, she needs three root canals! Yikes! I know that the dentist who's about to walk in doesn't do root canals, instead he extracts the tooth and implants a non-metal post. Three seems like a lot. Well, anyway, the doctor walks in and after introducing himself to my patient, he proceeds to do the exam and look at the x-rays. He explains that she does have severe decay on three teeth but that he can save them! She will need crowns on them, but she can avoid implants or worse, root canals. What a wonderful thing! And why can't the other dentist save her teeth? Not sure. But perhaps one of the three reasons listed above?

Root canals are not only unpleasant, but they kill the tooth, allowing bacteria to take up residence in the tooth pores, slowly excreting toxins into your body. Not a good idea.

And yet another personal dental lesson:

A family member of mine recently had a tooth extracted and a post implanted. She heard about my story and decided to switch dentists in order to get her fake tooth/crown put onto the post with the CNC machine so it would be a one day process. Her implanted post (by a different dentist) was a two step process: 1) extract the old tooth (which who knows, maybe it could have been saved?) and on the same visit implant some pig bone into the hole and sew it up, then 2) four months later cut open a hole in the socket and implant the post. The next step was to wait 2 more months, then put the crown on the post. So out of curiosity, we asked one-day-crown doctor, “What is your process for post implants?” Well, we were both surprised to find out that there is a nicer alternative. They do same day implants! And they use a vegan mineral patch instead of a pig bone! Amazing. Of course you then wait four months before having the same day crown put on. So overall 2 months faster for the post, only one surgery instead of two, and who knows how much less time making the crown. Oh well, now we know.

But I think the biggest miracle so far was the fact that one of my patients was actually laughing on several occasions during her dental exam with Dr. “One Day Crown.” This patient has severe dental phobia due to being slapped by her childhood dentist while crying and calling for her parents. She was having a panic attack because of an allergic reaction to the norepinephrine that is in the novacaine shots they give us to numb things. Back then they didn't know about this reaction some people have. She was not only slapped but strapped into the dental chair and knocked with other drugs. The fact that she was laughing during her recent visit with Dr. ODC and walked out having had a rather easy emotional time of things truly was a miracle. I have to admit, he makes me laugh too.

One last FYI:

If you too have a racing heart or other feelings of anxiety, you may have an epinephrine allergy. You can ask your dentist to use novacaine that doesn't have epinephrine in it so that you won't have this reaction.

My Dental Nightmare... Before you get another dental crown. A must read!

MY STORY


I'm happy to report that I am currently doing very well dentally. However this was not the case for the past 7 months!


It all started last June when a molar that had an old filling in it cracked in half! And of course, my dentist was out of town. There was no pain, but both halves were still attached and I couldn't chew on that side without food packing into the crack, spreading the tooth pieces apart. It was difficult to clean as you can imagine. I was at that time flying to Michigan every 2 weeks to help my chiropractor friend who had broken his back, so I had to get the tooth patched up before my plane left to go back to Michigan.


So I naturally went to another dentist who could get me in right away.


He did an amazing job extracting the broken piece and then patching the tooth. He said it needed a crown, but he wanted to wait 3 months to make sure the root wasn't infected.


After 3 months I returned to the new dentist and he started the crown prep.


(I could have gone to my dentist at this point, but this new guy had done such a good job with the temporary patch, and he got me in right away for the emergency cracked tooth, I figured the least I could do was to let him do the crown),


Life lesson reminder:


Follow your gut instinct. It usually keeps us out of trouble


I had never had a crown before so I didn't know what to expect, though he did explain things as he went.


Let's take a time out here with a short FYI on Dental Crowns:


A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance.


The crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.


A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

* To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.

* To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down.

* To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't a lot of tooth left.

* To hold a dental bridge in place.

* To cover mis shaped or severely discolored teeth.

* To cover a dental implant.

* To make a cosmetic modification.


Crowns can be made of:

All metal

Zirconia

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)

Porcelain fused to zirconia

All ceramic


So he ground down the tooth, put some liquid rubbery stuff on it, had me bite down for 2 minutes as the rubber hardened into a mold of my bite, then sent the mold away to a crown-making company. He put on a temporary crown and sent me home. A few days later he called me back to put the permanent crown on. He gave me a shot to numb the tooth, pulled off the temporary and put on the permanent.


It was the wrong color.


So he put the temp back on, sent me home to wait for a new crown with the right color to be made. A few days later he brought me back in, tried the 2ndnew crown, but when I closed my teeth, it broke. So he took another mold, and sent me home to wait.


In the meantime, the temporary crown didn't feel right... it came loose, so I went in to get it re-glued. Then the 3rd new crown came in, this time it was lined with metal underneath to make it stronger. This one too cracked the corner when I bit down.


More waiting, more loose temps, a broken temp, more jaw pain, headache, fatigue from the bacteria that must have been trying to get in the irritated gum around the tooth stub.


Several permanent crowns were not snug enough next to the adjacent teeth and had to be remade (the dental floss didn't “snap.”)


A patient of mine is a retired dental assistant. I told her the story in the middle of the process and she said I should count myself lucky because in her experience many dentists will just leave a permanent crown that isn't right, then you get problems with it down the road and end up needing a root canal because of the crown not being right all that time.


Finally, after countless shots and office visits, and 5 months later, the final permanent crown was glued in place.


I should have been relieved, but the tooth and gum were very sore still. So I patiently waited for the soreness to subside, because now there was no reason for it to be a problem. 6 weeks later it was still substantially sore. I figured out that if I flossed it after EACH meal and snack, it didn't hurt so much.


So I made an appointment with my original dentist (the one who had been on vacation) to have him examine the crown to see if it looked okay.


He has a dental camera and video screen that he used so I could see what he was seeing. The crown had a slight gap on about 10% of the line between it and the adjacent tooth. He said I was packing food between the teeth causing microbial growth and irritation of the gum and tooth.


He also used an electrical meter to test if there was any electrical current coming off the tooth. He explained that a battery consists of metal and an acid or electrolyte solution that interact together. He said that any metal in the mouth, surrounded by the electrolyte solution called saliva, can sometimes give off an electrical current. He said his wife had once had an electrical current of -4 mV coming off her crown that was causing chest pain and left sided facial droop. Once her metal lined crown was replaced with a non metal crown, her chest pain and facial droop went away!


As he spoke, I remembered having a “potato” clock as a child. It was a clock with four metal probes, each attached to the clock by electrical wire. You just cut a potato in half, put two of the probes into each half of the potato, and the clock would turn on. It would run until the potato dehydrated which was usually weeks later. You could also use an apple or a lemon.


So he tested my new crown (that had a metal underlayer) and it had an electrical current coming off it of -32 mV!


Yikes!


He was surprised I didn't have migraines or anxiety or other really bad symptoms.


So needless to say, he said I needed a new crown! I had mixed feelings, as you might expect. As I sat there, like a deer in the headlights, he kept talking. I wasn't really hearing what he was saying, then off in the corner of my brain I heard him say,


“So it's a one day procedure...,” I was confused.


I asked him how it was possible to redo the crown in one day?


Now he looked confused and asked me if I didn't know about their in-office crown making machine?


It turns out that they have a laser scanner that digitally puts a 3D picture of your tooth stub and surrounding teeth into the computer, the computer generates a suggested new crown, the dentist tweaks the 3D crown so it looks just perfect, then a machine in the back room (a CNC machine) cuts an exact replica out of a “blank tooth” of the computer generated model of the crown that you need!


Again, mixed emotions.


Anger that I didn't know about this and do this the first time, saving me 7 months of misery; joy that I'm gonna finally get my life back once he fixes this, and fear about how much this is gonna cost.


This has got to cost 3 times the price of the crown I just had put in, right?


Nope. Same price!!!


So I immediately scheduled for him to redo the crown. It took about 4 hours, but was completed same day. Immediately I felt like the rain cloud that had been over my head for the past two months was gone (was this from getting rid of the -32 mVs?). I had two other visits with him the next week to “readjust” the new crown so my bite was just right (no extra charge and no shots needed for this.) And about a week after, the crown feels like a normal tooth again!


And just because you like your dentist, trust your dentist, and hate starting with a new doctor or dentist, i strongly consider going to a dentist who has a CNC crown making machine with a laser scanner so you can get your crown done right and done the same day.


The thing to try and keep in front of your mind is that if you have had some very bad experiences, dentists have evolved, not only themselves but their equipment.


Also, there's little reason to use metal lined crowns nowadays. Remember that most crowns today, though white on top, have a lining of metal underneath. And, it's not worth getting a crown that isn't perfect, because it can increase your risk for needing a root canal later on.


If your dentist is using metal crowns or not using a CNC machine to do same day crowns, likely they will have good sounding reasons why they do what they do and why metal is harmless and so forth.


I'm not a dentist, so I guess I don't know for sure who is right, but all I can do is share my experience with you.


Now that I know about this, I have begun to find a few of my patients with lingering health issues who may need their metal crowns replaced. I'll keep you posted with their progress.

A word about replacing metal fillings: Please be careful if you choose to remove metal fillings.


These are 50% mercury by weight. The mercury is relatively stable while in the filling, but when removing it from the tooth, the grinding process puts lots of mercury vapors into the air. If you breath this in, you are getting poisoned more than you were before removing it. So please, don't put any new metal fillings into your mouth or your kids' mouths, and be very careful when choosing a dentist to remove metal fillings. I can refer you to safe removal dentists if you want.


A word about root canals:


These are not a good idea.


They can sometimes harbor toxic anaerobic bacteria in them, slowly releasing their poisons into your body, causing a mild background inflammation. The underlying ever-present component of all modern diseases (cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease, mood disorders, digestive disorders, chronic pain) is inflammation. Toxins are one cause of inflammation.


The alternative is a dental implant.


These are more costly but my pay off in the long run if your health is better as you age, as a result of the implant vs. the root canal. Again, don't just go anywhere for a dental implant. Educate yourself. Again I can give you referrals if you wish.


But most importantly, lets get you to the best dentist possible who can help keep your teeth and crowns and fillings healthy so you never need a root canal.


Honestly, if you are living right, and you need a root canal, it's your dentist's fault because he either didn't do the right dental corrective procedures with the right dental materials, or he didn't educated you on how to protect you teeth properly.


Lessons learned – and hopefully my experience will help you avoid such a nightmare!

Rough draft 1st chapter new book: diet

 This is a rough draft of the first chapter of a new book. Please give feedback, especially any questions you'd like answered about food and general diet that aren't covered so far here. Thanks!


Most can find room for a small veggie garden.
Optimal Health Diet:
(Assuming your digestion is great.)

Eat lots of veggies and greens with each meal,
eat good quality protein at eat meal.
Eat whole fruit or raw nuts/seeds between meals if you want a snack

Drink half body weight in oz of filtered water daily, but drink it mostly between meals. Don't drink more than 4oz of fluids at a meal, this stresses the stomach by diluting digestive juices, prolonging food time in the stomach before it empties into the small intestine.
If you weigh 150 pounds then drink about 75 oz of water per day.
Don't count caffeinated beverages since their diuretic effect causes excessive fluid loss through the kidneys. Dryer climates necessitate more fluid intake, humid climates less.

Don't eat transfats. They are found in fried foods, roasted nuts including peanut butter, vegetable spreads (fake butter) like margarine, most baked goods that are packaged and don't need refrigerating like muffins and cookies crackers and chips.

Cook with coconut oil to avoid creating transfats in your kitchen. Butter is okay if you don't brown it, olive oil is okay if fresh and cooked on low heat. It's best to just steam or bake things without oil. You can drizzle uncooked oils over your food once on your plate for taste.
Olive oil oxidizes quickly, so best to buy small bottles and use it all within 10 days of opening it. If it tastes different than the day you opened it, it's starting to go bad.

Quality meats are fresh meats from wild or grain free animals. Organic or conventional is up to you, the Organic label doesn't necessarily stand for the high quality it used to now that the government regulators have sold out to big corporate farming practices. It's best to know your farmers and find out how they feed and treat their animals.

If you are too busy to find a smart, health conscious, and ethical livestock farmer, one alternative source of quality protein would be vegetable source protein powder. Just eat lots of veggies and greens, then take enough protein shake to cover your protein needs. Or, maybe you can find a source of well fed chickens to buy eggs from. Just don't fry them in oils that turn to transfats.
Babies need 1 gram of protein per pound of weight per day. Children need about 1/2 gram protein per pound per day, adults need about 1/3 gram protein per pound per day, and pregnant or breastfeeding moms need about 2/3 gram of protein per pound per day. Of course the more physically active you are the more you need, so athletes can need double or triple these numbers.
Eggs have about 6 grams of protein each. Veggies and greens tend to have 2-3 grams of protein per half cup serving. Don't use soy sourced protein products. Rice, pea, hemp seed, acacia would be safer than soy. See Dr. Brownstein's book Soy Deception for more info on avoiding soy. Most don't need to be religious about avoiding soy, but eating it as your main source of protein is not recommended.

Keep your saturated, omega 3, and omega 6 fats balanced, and keep transfats at zero.
It's a big involved topic, but here's some tips.
Use high quality fish oil capsules to keep omega 3 levels optimal. Unless you have a source of fresh wild small fish like sardines, anchovies, trout, or similar, to eat daily, you'll need to take a couple capsules of fish oil daily. See chapter on Dr. C's daily supplements for healthy longevity.
Don't eat roasted nuts or seeds regularly. Fresh raw nuts/seeds are safe, but in moderation. Most are high in omega 6, not bad by itself, but if you get more 6 than 3 (fish oil) then you will tend to have more inflammation than otherwise. Theoretically you could eat lots of raw nuts if counterbalanced with extra fish oil capsules.
Saturated fats usually implies animal fats. Meats and milks from grain fed animals are highest in saturated fats. Even farm raised salmon is high in saturated and omega 6 fats because they are generally fed grains. Saturated fats are not bad, but too many in relation to the amount of omega 3 fats in your body causes inflammation.
We cannot make omega 3 in our bodies, but we can make saturated fats. We turn carbs into saturated fats when we overeat them, especially refined carbs from grains, like breads and pastas.
If you are overweight, most of your fat is likely saturated or omega 6 fat. And much of it could be transfats! So you have a long way to go to get your fats balanced, let alone losing weight. See chapter on weight loss.

Animal meats that are not grain fed will have less saturated fat and more omega 3 and 6 fats. This is good for you, but mostly if you eat the meat raw. Omega 3 and 6 fats turn to transfats when overlooked, saturated fats do not. I'm not suggesting that you eat raw meat but just making a point. Grass fed meats are a double edged sword. Less saturated fat but more likely to get transfats when cooking. So best to cook grass fed meats at lower temperatures. Increase the cooking time some to make up for this. And of course the least cooked the less transfats.

As far as digestible animal proteins, the smaller the animal the easier it tends to be to digest.

There are good sources of non fish omega 3, from algae oil. Flax seed or hemp seed oil can be used too, but extra steps are required by the body to utilize these oils.

Taking a poor quality fish oil is WORSE than not taking a fish oil at all. DO NOT try to save money buying cheap fish oil, you are shooting yourself in the foot. If you are too poor to buy high quality fish oil, don't take any. Or just take high quality fish oil every other day or every third day, whatever you can afford. Take nothing on days between.

Avoid foods with added sugar like desserts and soda, and in general, don't drink fruit juice. Sugar is usually made of 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Fruit juice has lots of fructose as well. Fructose is thought to be the cause of 75% of heart disease. It also contributes to developing diabetes, obesity, and gout. See Dr Robert Lustig's you tube videos and his 60 Minutes episode on the toxicity of sugar. He runs a child obesity clinic at UCSF. He says that he recommends that kids do 5 things to lose weight like playing outside and refraining from video games, but he says that the one variable that makes or breaks their success is fruit juice. If they drink it, they stay fat, if the don't drink it they lose weight.

Put some effort into rotating families of foods or at least eating a wide variety of families. For instance, if you eat steamed kale with your eggs for breakfast, cabbage rolls with mustard greens for lunch, and broccoli and turnips as sides for dinner, you are only eating one family of vegetables: brassicas. Just like a poodle and a Great Dane are both the same species, broccoli all the above vegetables mentioned were "bred" by farmers over the years from cabbages.
Plant families tend to have similar nutrient profiles and similar toxin profiles. All plants have small amounts of toxins that aim to prevent animals from overindulging in eating them into extinction. Generally animals nibble on plants before moving onto other types of plants. This ensures no one toxin builds up in their system, and the plants can recover from the damage sustained from the animal foraging.

Cooking vegetables breaks down some of the plant toxins, but it also breaks down some of the vitamins. So cooking vegetables mild to moderately is a good idea generally. Eating 10-25% of your vegetables raw and cooking the rest might be wise. Green smoothies can be a great way to get more raw veggies into your diet. See chapter on green smoothies.

But eating a wide variety of families is also wise.

The idea is not to be over concerned about this but to just count how many groups you tend to eat and see if you can expand your groups a little bit each month. Perhaps avoid or minimize some of the groups that find their way into everything we eat, like wheat, corn and soy.

Where oh where has my happiness gone?



Happiness is physiologic.

Mammal DNA codes for positive and negative emotions that correlate with survival probabilities.

In general, negative emotions due to poor survival circumstances motivate us to take actions to acquire something better, and positive emotions due to rich circumstances allow for either lazy actions (to keep things the same) or extra-curricular actions like playing. 

Either way, happiness is pretty much guaranteed since there is a low level of happiness that creeps in during the actions taken (triggered by negative emotions) to improve one's life (felt as hopeful anticipation).

Lack of food, shelter, sleep, and friendship all lead to negative emotions and tend to motivate us to attempt to acquire them.

In modern USA, 99% have plenty of calories, shelter, sleep, and friendship. Yet depression, anxiety, or just general unhappiness is rampant. Now there's droves of people trying to "find" happiness. So what's gone wrong? Have the old DNA rules on how to be happy been broken?

The DNA programming is not broken, we just missed an ingredient. Who can guess which required ingredient is almost necessarily missing from a modern lifestyle?

One major ingredient needed to turn on human happy genes: copious amounts of midday unfiltered sunlight shining directly on bare skin.

I have a full body artificial sun lamp in my clinic. So far I am 2 for 2 using this on people with severe anxiety/depression who were unresponsive to medication. I thought the light therapy would help by maybe 30%, but instead was surprised to find 99% resolution after 4-8 weeks of every other day full body bare skin light therapy sessions. Only 2-4 sessions monthly seem to be needed to maintain improvements in these two cases.

It's been recently shown that endorphins, molecules of happiness, are created in the skin from direct sun exposure. And, serotonin/melatonin cycles are created and maintained by sunlight exposure. In short:

Modern human unhappiness is an artifact of an ubiquitous sub-clinical illness caused by lack of direct sunlight.

Simply procure food, shelter, sleep, friends, and lots of sunlight and you will have happiness whether you want it or not.

Correction: Provide lots of sunlight and have happiness whether you already have basic needs met, or are expecting to acquire them in the future through work.

Isn't too much happiness a bad thing because we wouldn't lift a finger to feed ourselves if we were in constant bliss?

There is no such thing as too much happiness, because it just leads to play. Play fosters creativity and generally leads to invention of new stuff to make our lives even more fun. Play is so fun that we invent machines to grow food for us so that we have more time to play. These actions are motivated and achieved by lots of happiness and the drive to have even more happiness. It's wrong to assume that a person who works to get more happiness is always motivated by unhappiness.

Just imagine what our world would be like today had we known about the essential qualities of direct sunlight exposure 100 years ago and took action! We could have eradicated war, poverty, disease, old age, and even having to work for a living by now. Instead we would all be playing for a living!

I don't buy the old idea that we are here to suffer and develop character through hardship. I say we are here to develop character by creating better ways for people to enjoy life through camaraderee with others. But just like in an airplane, "in case of loss of cabin pressure, put your oxygen mask on first before helping your loved ones with theirs." Take responsibility for your own happiness and get optimal levels of light. Then spread the word.

We will soon have a new light therapy bed, this one is all red light. Most people feel slightly stoned after 20 minutes under these red lights, they make you feel that good. When I use the red light bed, I literally feel like I'm eating a depleted nutrient through my skin!

New Treatment for Infections without Using Antibiotics: A possible cure for Lyme's Disease?

Antibiotics have perhaps done more to save lives than any other single invention ever.

But antibiotics have several down sides:

1) They are based on fungal toxins which means that your liver has to work hard to break them down so that they don't build up in your system and damage your other organs, nerves, or brain. In this way they are similar to chemotherapy in that they are very toxic. The idea is to take just enough toxin to kill the cancer or infection, but not so much that they kill you.

2) Chronic use of antibiotics can have long term consequences on your immune system, liver, and intestinal health.

3) Antibiotics kill good intestinal flora along with the infection. If the intestinal flora (probiotics) are not replaced immediately following treatment, other major problems can develop down the road (it is not standard medical protocol to give patients probiotic supplements after antibiotic use, go figure). Such things as yeast infections, acid reflux, ulcers, irritable bowel, constipation, excess gas, and even more bacterial infections are more likely to occur after killing good bowel flora from antibiotic use.

4) Bacteria evolve quickly. Antibiotics never kill all the bacteria in an infection, a few are left over, and usually the ones with the best genes for tolerating antibiotics. Over time, bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, putting us right back to where we were before we invented them.

5) Antibiotics don't work for viral infections like colds, flus, chicken pox, shingles, ebola, etc.

Bacterial toxins can turn off, slow down, or otherwise interfere with your immune system. Toxins also damage tissues as the bacteria burrow deeper inside you. 

A new treatment aims to simply absorb the toxins excreted from bacteria. Robbed of the effects of their secretions by this new treatment, bacteria don't stand a chance against an animal's immune system.

Small natural fat particles called liposomes were injected into mice who had sepsis, an infection so bad that it had spread into the blood and circulatory system. The liposomes quickly absorbed the bacterial toxins, allowing the mice's immune systems to stop the infections.

It seems to me that if this turns out to work in humans as well as it does in mice, it could be a huge deal for not only antibiotic resistant bacterial infections, but it may also be able to be used to combat viral infections. 

If viral toxins were quickly absorbed by this new treatment, your immune system would have a much better chance to kill the virus before it killed you, in the case of ebola. Or at the least, taking this new treatment at the first sign of the flu might actually prevent flu symptoms while your body finished fighting off the virus.

Another possible huge benefit (in my opinion) could be for stopping Lyme's disease symptoms and halting further damage from the Lyme's toxins. Lyme's is known for causing widespread joint, muscle, and nerve pain due to the effects of the spirochetal toxins. Spirochetes are a type of bacteria, but antibiotics don't work very well for Lyme's because they bore deep into the tendons, joints, and other connective tissues where blood vessels are sparse. With few blood vessels, it is hard for the antibiotics to reach the spirchetes. 

But, since all the symptoms of Lyme's are due to the toxins released by the spirochete, liposomal injections could theoretically stop all the symptoms. Without pain, the person could begin to sleep deeply again and strengthen their body until the infection could be wiped out or at least held at bay by the immune system.

Liposomes are naturally occurring fat soluble microscopic organelles inside our cells that we use for absorbing certain toxins and fats and then burning them up. The researchers are of course artificially manufacturing the liposomes for injection into the mice, but from what I know about such things, the liposomes should not pose any harm to the animal or person.

The real cause of colds and flus and how to cure them!


Have you ever wondered why medicine has been able to achieve such feats as successful organ transplants and laser vision correction, but they still haven't been able to cure the common cold?

We all know that microscopic viruses are contracted into your body before you catch a cold. But this is only half the story. Have you ever wondered why sometimes one or two members of a household won't catch the cold that everyone else came down with? Certainly everyone in the house was exposed to the virus.

The other half of the equation:

  • Why do most people get colds and flus in the winter? It's not because it's colder. In India, the cold and flu season hits during the monsoons and it is anything but cold outside. But the one thing in common with winter in the US and the monsoons in India is that there is no UVB from the sun reaching the surface to make vitamin D in people's skin. Vitamin D is needed in high amounts in order for the immune system to work properly. During the summer months, most people have enough vitamin D from the sun that they don't get colds.



  • Solution: Take enough vitamin D to get your blood levels of vitamin D up to 60-80 ng/ml. (My office can order your vitamin D blood test at a cash discount; be sure to check your levels every spring and fall.) To reach optimal levels, supplements can range from 2,000 to 20,000 iu of D3 per day. On average it takes about 8,000 iu daily. It depends on your weight and body fat percentage. The more you weigh and the more fat you have, the more vitamin D you will need to take. But the only way to know for sure is to test your blood. Studies clearly show that ALL Americans who do not supplement with D are low in it during the winter. The other option besides taking a D supplement is to regularly receive light therapy like we have at my clinic.   • The immune system heavily depends on its front line defense: mucus. Most cold and flu viruses are transmitted through the membranes in our lungs, throats, sinuses, eyes, and nose. These tissues secrete a thin mucus that coats them as a protective barrier against microbes. The microbes get stuck in the mucus and are either expelled along with the mucus or are immediately killed by natural antimicrobial agents in the mucus. One of these antimicrobial agents is iodine. Iodine insufficiency weakens your front line defense because you can't produce effective mucus without enough iodine.



  • Solution 1: Take extra iodine during cold and flu season. Take between 1.5 and 12 mg of iodine daily. Note: 1 mg = 1000 mcg (Contrary to allopathic belief, iodine is very safe since we just pee out any excess. But, if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition such as Hoshimoto's or Graves disease, then you should be supervised by a health care professional while taking iodine.) Unless you eat seafood three meals a day, 7 days a week, then you need to supplement with iodine. We need so much extra iodine in modern times because our exposure to bromide, chlorine, and fluoride is off the charts and interferes with iodine in the body. The cure for these toxins is to take lots of iodine. Have you noticed that chlorine dries out your skin, eyes, and burns your nose? Dry skin and membranes means there are millions of microscopic cracks for air-born viruses to get into your body. Iodine helps heal these chlorine caused cracks.
  • Solution 2: Is there chlorine in your shower water? Get a shower head filter from the hardware store. They take out 95% of the chlorine, cost less than $50, and last about 6 months. Refill filter cartridges can be less than $20.



  • Have you ever caught a cold or flu but you weren't even around anyone who was sick? This is a case of a virus allergy. You were exposed to a small number of a virus that was left in the air several minutes after someone who is now gone had sneezed. Normally such a small amount of a virus would not cause you to get sick, but in your case, your immune system freaked out. Your immune system ramped up its huge armies to fight, even though the enemy was the equivalent of a group of rowdy junior high kids. Too late, you have to go through the entire cold or flu cycle until your immune system is satisfied that the coast is clear. The reason for a virus allergy is an over-active immune system, which is the same reason for any allergy.



  • Solution 1: Omega 3 oil supplement. Omega 3, generally from fish oil, is needed for overall total health. One of its jobs is to keep the immune system from getting out of control. This is why omega 3 supplements can help people with autoimmune and allergy problems so much, because these are conditions of an over-active immune system. Take 600 to 1200 mg of omega 3 daily during the summer and take 1200 to 1800 mg daily during the winter or up to 2400 mg if you think you coming down with a cold.
  • Solution 2: Stay away from fried foods (like french fries), margarine, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. These are full of something called trans-fats which counter-act omega 3 oils. Trans-fats actually contribute to allergies (including virus allergies) and autoimmune issues.



  • Don't shoot your immune system in the foot! Eating sugar, (meaning desserts, candy, soda, fruit juice, and almost all beverages you find at a mini-mart) can lower your immune system dramatically for several hours or even days after consuming it. 99% of the time when a patient of mine gets a cold or flu, when I ask them if they had a lot of dessert or candy within 5 days of getting sick, they say yes. Desserts taste really good, but colds and flus are just not worth it to me. The only time I eat desserts in the winter is to be polite to the host of a party, and I take a small piece and eat just a few bites if possible. Then I rave about how good it is and then when no one is looking I put the rest in the trash. When asked to have seconds I say that I'd love to but I'm really full! And I never eat candy. I'll take the candy and say I'm saving it for later, then throw it out later.






  • A slow bowel is a toxic bowel. Toxins lower the immune system worse than sugar does. Do whatever it takes to have at least two bowel movements daily, optimally three.



  • Solution: Have regular bowel movements: Drink plenty of water (45-75 ounces daily). Go easy on the starches: bread, rice, pasta, and white potato can turn to a sticky glue in the intestine, feeding yeast, and slowing the bowels. When in a pinch, take magnesium mineral tablets for a natural laxative. George Goodhart, the father of Applied Kinesiology and muscle testing in general, once said that colds and flus are caused by a toxic bowel and that the cure is an enema!



  • Lack of sleep lowers the immune system and allows viruses to take hold and cause illness much more readily.



  • Solution: Get extra sleep. If you know you've been exposed to a virus, sleep an extra 90 minutes each night for the next three to five nights. This gives your body the extra rest it needs to re-cooperate from the stress of having to deal with the virus quickly before it has a chance to multiply, causing illness.



  • Stress lowers the immune system. Even just hearing bad news can lower your immune system.



  • Solution: Keep a positive attitude and stay away from negative news and negative people. There is good and bad to everything. Make sure that at least half your thoughts during the day are about how good things are in your life. If more than 75% of your thoughts are about how bad things are right now, then you are less likely to fight off a virus without getting ill during the process. I no longer watch the news or read the paper. If something big happens, someone else is sure to tell me. I also don't watch rated R movies. The extra violence is very stressful for the little kid brain inside us that controls our immune system. It's not worth it. Movies without excessive violence and with happy endings that make you feel good can actually strengthen the immune system.
